Attacking Spam with Spam?
Posted by macbros | Under My Opinion | 215 views Thursday Apr 5, 2007You know something? I just had a brain fart! Yup, an idea went and exploded out of my noggin’.
What happened was I was checking my e-mail and there was a spam e-mail in it. I don’t get a lot of e-mail spam because I’m really selective with who gets my main e-mail address and make sure they know the proper etiquette on how to send bulk messages (ie: jokes and stuff) by using the BCC field rather than cram the TO: field full of e-mail addresses. (this prevents your address being sent to everybody’s header so their e-mail Trojan can scrap your address for the spamming community.)
But anyway. You know the spam e-mail’s you get that you need to reply to an e-mail address to confirm you want that $200,000,000,000.99 prize that your are guaranteed to receive, just as long as you respond to the e-mail?
Well, if you’re a website owner, and you’ve been doing web design, or just running a web site for a period of time that you know it’s a bad thing to hard code your e-mail address into the website without using some sort of java or address munging to prevent spam robots from scraping your site for e-mail addresses to spam. Or somebody told you not to hard code the address. Whatever…
But wouldn’t it be kewel, if we all took the e-mail addresses from the spam we get and copied them into a notepad and saved them all up for a weekly posting called, “Spam My Spammer Please!“? We could post all the email addresses of the spammers that spamed us, and maybe cross link our sites with trackbacks so the bots could follow the links.
The spammers in-box would end up being filled with spam. Lets see how they like sifting through hundreds of spam messages.
I’m not talking about pulling the e-mail addresses out from the headers, because most of the time they’re spoofed and are fake. I’m talking about the ones that want you to e-mail them back through a special e-mail address. Instead of replying, just copy and past it into the collection. ![]()
And the e-mails that have a link to a web site. Go to the website and snag all the e-mail addresses from there also. But don’t use the link in the e-mail, just copy and paste the root Domain into your browser without the extra info after the .com/ part of the URL. That way you’re not acknowledging that you clicked the link from your e-mail.
As you might already know, just by following my posts over the past couple of years, I hate spam. Any way to get the tables turned to the point that I’M the one who’s annoying, I’ll do the dance. ![]()
Pretty good idea ey’? It might take a couple of your precious minutes, but the bigger picture of hundreds of people taking an extra minute might actually be like the army in the movie 300 fighting against the millions of enemies.
But like I said before. I don’t get a lot of e-mail spam *knock on wood* so my list will be small. But I bet there’s a few people out there that could contribute. Heck. I’ll even post the addresses for you.
What Say You All! ?

I like the idea in theory, but in practice most of my spam comes from spoofed addresses, so I’m not sure that you’d be hitting the spammer back. You might be hitting some poor schmoe whose address got spoofed instead.
Laura, I did make that point too. I was referring to the ones you have to actually reply to. You know the ones that ask you to email them back with your bank info, street address, phone number…?
Use that e-mail you’re supposed to reply to.
And the ones with the web site referral. Go to the root domain address and skim all the e-mails from the site. You know, the ones you can buy your cheap drugs from?
The idea is great, IMO. Would make spamming to much work for the spammer.
They sit back and let a program spam us, but they can’t sift through their replys with a program.

Yes, I see now – sorry I didn’t read more carefully the first time. I’ll give it a shot on several of my sites. Why not?
You’re lucky not to get much spam – I get hundreds per day, and finally paid for the Cloudmark service to slow it down. (It works great, btw.) Can’t believe anyone clicks on that crap, but I guess they must – it’s obviously profitable enough that they keep doing it.
I’ve become a spam crusader in a way.
I’ve taught myself all the do’s and don’ts as far as spam goes.
