Facebook Surfing Cost Lady Her Job

She was home sick and was surfing Facebook on her iPhone while she was lying in bed and she was spotted by her employer, so they fired her.
The circumstances for the firing are really stupid in my opinion, (That you’re entitled to) because I’ve been home sick from work and I get up out of bed every once in awhile to go on the computer. It’s just to keep from getting bed sores.
The woman said she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark but was then seen to be active on Facebook, which insurer Nationale Suisse said in a statement had destroyed its trust in the employee.
via Yahoo news.
To me this seems to be really sneaky of the employer. It sounds like this is a cheap excuse just to get rid of her. Even if she was actually sitting at a desktop computer, it’s a big difference from working a full 8 hour shift and dealing with the usual work environment and dealing with people while sick, than being at home sick and poking into Facebook for about an hour or so while in the comfort of your home where you can go lay down when you need to.
All this Facebook vs. Work news I’ve been hearing about lately is crazy. Of course it’s a stupid idea to bad mouth co-workers or your work place on Facebook, because that’s just going to get you in shit. But to be fired for simply being on Facebook is ridiculous.
This is just my opinion, and you’re entitled to it.

she deserved to be fired. She lied about her “sickness”. If you can stare at a monitor at home you can stare at one at work.
thats just like calling in saying you wont be in because you hurt your back, but your boss sees you moving your brother in laws fridge up three flights of stairs.

@Uhh Yeah – Naw, you’re comparison is way off. Physically moving a fridge and looking at a monitor are not even close to being the same.
But staring at a monitor, while sick, for a couple of hours rather than spending an entire work day sick and working with customers is a lot different.
And so you would fire somebody if they lay in bed sick watching TV then too?
Besides, she was not on a computer, she was in bed on her iPhone.

why isnt it close to the same? they would be lying to thier boss in either event.
She only stared at the monitor for two hours, but the guy in my example only moved one fridge.
and yes if you told me you had to lay down in a dark room, yet you had the tv on watching it, then yeah you should be fired. You lied about your condition. last time i checked a tv casts light into a dark room.
now if she said she had the shits, and was home with the shits, then yeah okay go on facebook, watch tv, do whatever, but when what you are doing is the exact thing you said you couldnt come to work and do, then you should be sacked.
and an Iphone is a computer John.just in smaller form.

@Uhh Yeah – I guess you have a different opinion then, but you’re entitled to mine.

That’s why it’s so very important to avoid crossing business and professional lines when playing around online. Twitter, Facebook, blogging… it is imperative to either keep shit professional or don’t invite your coworkers to join your personal network.

Aw, crap. I fell off the Top Commentators list again.
And, yeah, I know it’s off topic.

@Jason – I still think this is a bit overboard. Yea, posting badmouth comments about your boss on Facebook is a bad idea, but getting fired just because she went online while sick at home, I think that is just stupid.
@DragonLady – Doesn’t take long does it DL?

I have a strong feeling that this was more likely a “straw that broke the camel’s back” type of thing. I’m sure that she wasn’t the model employee

@MrCorey – Maybe, maybe not. Who knows. But if it was, I’m sure they could have got something that was a lot stronger to be a better reason than, “I saw you on Facebook!”

I think the punishment was a little harsh but I suspect she may have been abusing Facebook while she was at work too or why would the employer even have known to go on there and check her info? Maybe she should have gotten a note put in her file or something but maybe she already had warnings before. That’s the only reason I can think they’d be so drastic about it. But I could be wrong and I know what your opinion is on this already cuz I read all the comments! LOL.

@teeni – I’ve been home sick in bed and watched TV at the same time. Regardless if I watched TV or viewed Facebook on my iPhone, I’m still sick and shouldn’t be at work.
If this was something that was a long time coming for her, I think they should have fired her on something a little more work related. Using Facebook as your leverage is just so idiotic.
