Feel Like Hotlinking – Try This Instead!
Posted by macbros | Under Cool Finds | 228 views Saturday Apr 7, 2007I hate it when jack wads hotlink my images! I bet you do too.
But what if you find an image on the web that you want to share, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of copying the image and saving it to your hard drive, then uploading it to your host and then placing the image tag with your own link.. bla bla bla bla? You get the picture?
Well there is a new way to snag that image without stealing the bandwidth from a fellow internet user.
All you need to do is use imgred.com. What they do is store the image when it is called for the first time on their side and then the image is never hotlinked from the original source.
This is how you use it.
This image was used and is actually hotlinked using imgred.com:

This is the image url that was used:
http://www.imgred.com/http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/
managerhelpingmanagers/bandwidththeft.gif
You see! All you have to do is use the base URL (http://www.imgred.com/) and add your image url right after it (http://www.imgred.com/http://www.site.com/image.jpg)
You can also add tn after the root domain to make a thumbnail.
www.imgred.com/tn/http://www.garoustudios.com/images/Hotlink.jpg
Gives you this:

Saves time, and you won’t piss people off by hotlinking!

But what does http://www.imgred.com get out of offering this service? Why would they offer it free? It’s kinda like gravatars, how do they make money off of it?
Ads?
Well if you go to their site, it appears there are no ads either. Like gfkas said, almost like Gravatar.
[...] I published a post on alternate ways to avoid hotlinking. You don’t even have to save the image to your server, or use an file storage site. It’s as simple as incerting a pre URL before your’s. Check it out HERE. [...]
