Hosting Problems Fixed? – Maybe?

Well, if you were here yesterday and yesterday night, chances are you didn’t get to the site. That was because my host Top Hosting Center went FUBAR again. A common occurrence. It has happened so many times that I had to vent my frustrations and opinion (that you’re entitled to) on the service I’ve experienced over the past Year.

Well, they might have seen my Hosting Problems – AGAIN!! Post. I think they did because I received an e-mail from them yesterday evening when I was at work. This may be a canned excuse that went to everybody on the server that I’m on, and they are expressing their concern on the power of the blogger’s writing.

The e-mail I got is as follows;

Dear customer,

First of all let start off with an apology for the downtime caused lately. THC will do everything to improve the stability of his servers.

The web server in which your site is hosted is a strong server. But unfortunately its facing more than a few problems now. We worked with our NOC staffs to get the last issue fixed as soon as possible and temporary to bring back your website up until the new server will be available.

Good news for all customers that are hosted on web2.tophostingcenter.com, your account will be moved to a stronger web server with a speed connexion of 1000 mbps or 1GB, this is 10 times faster than what you have actually and free of charge.

This is the first phase of an important restructuration of our infrastructure . During the next days and weeks we will be in contact with you to advise you when your account will start to be moved. For sure, this is a major move and your websites will have a downtime of maximum of an hour ( depending of where you are located it could be longer ) because of the propagation of new IPs. (This move is a must)

This move will not affect your access to your THC user panel. The process of moving your account will be done during 24 hours ( copy files, verification , IP assignation … ).

For whom that have dedicated IPs, this IPs will change on the same way as the shared IPs as well. Some Blogs will certainly have some broken links, we will be there for supporting you.

In anytime please open a ticket and as usually, it will be a huge pleasure to assist you in your issue.

Once again we have a lot coming for improving our infrastructure and it is just a beginning . We want to see our customers hosted in a stable and reliable infrastructure and we will do this switch as soon as possible.

Thank you of all customers , it is because of you that THC grew up so fast and we will honor it.

Best regards

Eric Vanier, CEO
Tophostingcenter.com

Did you notice what I noticed right off the bat there? The opening, “First of all let start off with an apology…..

Once I read that first line I believe I know who wrote it. You know who you are. The “let start” instead of “let’s start” gave him away. And WTF is “restructuration” Shouldn’t that be “restructuring”? But anyway, that’s not the point I’m trying to make here.

Sugar coated maybe? As far as speed goes, that’s always nice, but I felt the sites were fast already, but speed means dip shit to me when the servers are down. And the part about links being broken? Who writes links with IP’s these days? The only thing I have that uses IP’s is my Web-Cam, but that’s not the host IP, it’s my web-cam server.

All this actually boils down to for me is, more planned downtime, downtime is downtime to me, planned or not. Downtime is not good at all when you have been experiencing it so many times.

OK, so they’re moving to a faster server. But if the people don’t know how to run the slower one, what’s moving to a faster one going to accomplish

Well I guess I can say they’re making an attempt to resolve the problems. If it makes any difference, time will tell. There’s not a whole lot I can do, but post my opinion, that you’re entitled to. Let’s hope that when the transfer is completed I’ll never have to look at a browser error again when trying to write a post because the server is FUBAR.

Lets hope that if there is a planned maintenance downtime scheduled, it’s only every six months or longer and it will be during off-peak hours and only last 20 or so minutes, and not days.

Lets hope they loosen up on the file user permissions, so when WordPress wants to automatically upgrade, it can AUTOMATICALLY upgrade without me having to submit a ticket to get a file deleted because it’s in httpd mode. That a pain in the ass, just as bad as downtime.

Most of all, lets just hope they finally get it all right.

Ill keep you posted.

I know there are other spelling errors, like “connexion” but I wasn’t focused on spelling at the moment. But I would suggest somebody proof reads their corporate e-mails though.

MacBros, I tried to post a comment on your other post about THC – and you never published it. Could you please check your spam folder?

    @Mig – Got it. ;)

Thank you for fixing that, Macbros. :) I don’t really get it why it landed in the spam filter, but it happens sometimes – Akismet is overzealous.

About Eric’s letter: he wrote it himself, in an effort to apologize to all users affected. English is a second language for him, he is a French native – we could cut him some slack here. The letter was sent to all users affected by this problem, not only to you. You are also not the only one who wrote a public “opinion” – you are however the only one who used such strong language. I see you do not like “negative and personal attacks” on your site. What about practicing what you preach? A negative opinion is valid, but don’t you think it matters how we put it? I am sure you didn’t mean any offense though. I do understand how frustrating down times are. I also go cursing when it happens, to be honest, and I am sure Eric does too, especially because that affects his business more than yours as you can imagine. But to “curse online” is not the best approach, don’t you think? Anyway, sponge over that!

I am here to tell you that THC will do everything they can to keep their promise.

About file user permission: you can change that yourself, and it is actually your responsibility, using your ftp client (for example I use Total Commander). Just change everything to 777 on files you want to be re-writable. Hope this helped.:)

@Mig – I actually thought it was somebody else that wrote that who sometimes talks like that, so I was wrong on thinking who I thought who wrote it. Actually the person who I thought wrote it actually told me they didn’t. They will remain anonymous so they don’t get in any heat.

I never assumed that I was the only recipient of the letter.

This may be a canned excuse that went to everybody on the server that I’m on

I use what ever language I want that helps me express what I’m really feeling and I don’t play any character that I am not. I say what I want and I am not here to spoil anybody’s feelings. If you don’t like it, don’t read it, I’m not a two faced Politically Correct wienie that’s scared to say what’s on my mind that’s scared of what others will think. If somebody doesn’t like what I say, fuck em’ they can just keep on moving on…

The text around the submit button refers to Personal attacks. IE, personally attacking other commenters or my self by getting personal, such as name calling or defamation. I encourage speaking ones mind and offering another opinion.

As you can see in my pointing out of grammar errors, I never actually got personal, just pointed out the errors. I actually only did that to poke fun at the person who I thought did it, just to mess up their hair so to speak.

Also, I’m not referring to the file permissions, I’m referring to the actual Owner/Group, not user permissions. I actually wrote that wrong, but the httpd:httpd should have signaled what I was actually talking about for anybody who understands that. But when the files get locked in httpd:httpd status, no FTP app will let you do anything with the file if you don’t have server admin status.

But anyway, I can honestly say that I really do hope that they do keep their promise, (this time). I would like to see them maintain a 99% uptime guarantee, because like I said, the speeds of the service is A+.

Combine the A+ speeds with a 99% uptime guarantee and you’re looking at being in the Top 10 Best Hosting Companies on the Inter webs.

We have different opinions about use of strong language, Macbros. Using a polite manner when we disagree is not about being “politically correct” or “two faced” – it’s about being gracious and having a dignifying conduit. If you think that writing curses on your site is a dignifying conduit for yourself, who am I to say anything about that? You are right: if people don’t like it, they shouldn’t read it. And this is how you lose readers and community instead of winning them.

About the person you are talking about – I think I know who he is. ;)

About the grammar and spellings: are you sure you are entitled to throw the stones? Are you so sure about your grammar and spelling skills I mean?

railroad-xing OK, time to get this topic back on track now. It’s not about grammar, spelling, and peoples feelings. My bad for letting it go off track for this long. Future off topic comments will be removed.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

@Dasylva – It appears to have been solved. I haven’t had any issues yet, and it is actually faster too.
