Stern Person

I have to be a little bit stern when it comes to comments here because it seems that ever since I have implemented the Do-Follow feature to this site, some folks seem to try and take advantage of my good gesture and post business links in their comments.

If you post a comment that is post related and is a legitimate comment I will leave it, as I encourage all to comment as much as possible. But if that comment has a link to a business site and not an actual blog, I will remove the link but leave the comment.

If the comment is less than a real effort on the commenter’s part, for reasons just to get a link back, then the entire comment is trashed. Something like, “Nice Site!”, or, “Good Post.” followed by a link to either their blog or business will not stay.

If you truly have something to comment on any post, then please do so. But to comment just for the sake of a link back, I suggest you don’t waste both yours, any my time.

The reason I won’t allow linkage to business sites is because I have several sponsors paying good money to get a link in a post or have a review done up, and it is not fair to the paying people to see some business slip in a free link to their site. If you want to get a link, then  ‘cantact me‘  on the sidebar.

I just wanted to get this out on the table in case somebody gets pissed off because I either removed a link to their business site, or have removed their comment all together, and I’m sorry, but I have to draw the line some place.

If you’re just an outright comment spammer though, you can just go to hell and fuck yourself you piece of rotten festering puss-filled piece of shit. You’re not welcome here and never will be. I hate you and so does every blogger on the planet. Just go crawl under the rock you came from.

Now that, that was said. Happy blogging and keep them comments coming!

Have a nice day!

:)

Remove links at will. I don’t have any problem removing links from our blogs and seeing other bloggers do the same. Frankly, I’d rather see that then a comment quota in order for the nofollow to be removed.

(and just for anybody reading, I didn’t bother leaving a link in this comment).

Just FYI, your register your own avatar plugin doesn’t accept valid emails with a plus sign in them, so I’ll forever be a “stranger” at this blog.

The RFC specs recognize the plus sign as valid in the format, so the plugin author should add support in his/her code.

This is also a good way to see what sites sell or giveaway your email addresses to spammers (not saying that will happen here) — but, well, spam is spam is spam.

(and still not leaving my URL in the website field)

LOL @ TDavid.

Interesting thing about the + in e-mail thing.
I doubt that the author still exists as this is an old plug-in. sorry.

Hmm, programmer gone away? I’ve seen that before lol.

Tell you what, you can drop the plugin code to me via email (the one here) or point me to where the plugin is located to download (if it’s still available).

Then I can fix this issue for you really quick and send the file back with the line(s) of code I modified. It’s just a regular expression issue. I’ve seen it in a lot of email validation code out there, unfortunately :(

I’ve been doing PHP programming professionally since 1999, just FYI so you don’t think I’m just some stranger wanting to hack code running on your site. I also have written a few wordpress plugins (all GPL licensed) which you could find by simply Googling my name and Wordpress if you are looking for additional credentials/background.

This is just an offer to fix something with no strings attached. Not looking for or expecting anything in return.

(well, except for not being labeled a “stranger” next to my name maybe)

The plug-in is called Comvatars.

Thanks.

TDavid, I wouldn’t consider your TDScripts blog a business site BTW. It’s actually blog related.

I’m referring to Hotels and Real Estate links. Plus spam.

September 8th, 2007 | 6:12 pm

That’s cool, I don’t usually leave my tdscripts blog URL anywhere in blog signatures (and wasn’t going to in this case), I use one of our blog URLs (the one there now usually).

But maybe you should specifically spell out what types of businesses you mean. To me, a business is a business. Just because a real estate agent leaves a comment on my blog as long as his/her comment is relative I don’t really care. To each his own :)

If you are going to pick and choose what types of businesses can leave their signatures may I respectfully suggest that it’s going to be very confusing for readers to follow? You’re going to catch some people in there like me who just say screw it and put nothing there — or don’t leave any comments at all.

Question on your installation of Comvatars. Did you install the gravatar and favatar stuff too, or just the comvatar plugin by itself. See instructions:

* optional: the Comvatars Avatar Pool (later more)
* optional: the Comvatars localization files (later more)
* optional: the Favatars 2 plugin by Jeff Minard & Co
* optional: the Gravatars 2.6 plugin by Skippy

It is optional to include those, that’s why I’m asking.

I’m testing my gravatar against your install, which should partly answer this question with this comment.

September 8th, 2007 | 7:40 pm

Hmm, nope, it appears that you don’t have the gravatars plugin installed. You must be using the default install without the extras. If you had the gravatars plugin installed too, it would grab the gravatar :)

September 8th, 2007 | 7:41 pm

Well, that worked with the alternate email :) I was kind of hoping I could set my own avatar, not choose from a bunch of preselected ones. Still, it’s better than “stranger” I guess.

At the author’s website, BTW, there are posts on his blog as recent as 8/31/2007 so you should still drop him a line and tell him about the + email bug. I’m guessing he’ll want to know about it so he can issue a patch.

After looking over the code and the fact that I didn’t see any licensing I’m going to pass on messing with this any further. Without saying any more, let’s just chalk it up to professional courtesy.

If this were my plugin or was a plugin that I wanted to use, I’d definitely want to know about this, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d find the plugin author will be interested in hearing about this issue.

Best of luck :)

feature in their blogs. It seems people want to abuse a good thing by thinking they can get away with slipping in a free link to a business site or post one or two word comments just for link back reasons and actually probably don’t even read the postread more

September 8th, 2007 | 9:24 pm

TDavid, I’ve actually left several comments on that persons site and not one of them answered.

I like the plugin, and it is the only one that lets you use custom avatars for your site, unfortunately.

You can make your own. There’s a link on the top left sidebar. ‘Make your own avatar’.
You just follow the instructions to a tee and you’ll get the one you want.

Oh, and What I mean by business links, I mean links to sites that aren’t blogs and don’t have any way for users to interact with a post. No comments.

I prefer blog related site links, in order to make it a larger community.

Make Sense?
