Such Kind Words From Hotlinker
Posted by MacBros | Under My Opinion, Site Update | - 303 Peepers read this post. Thursday Jul 17, 2008If you’re not familiar with the term Hotlinking, in short, it is when somebody directly links a file from your site to display on theirs, usually without permission. Hotlinking is something that I do not tolerate. It means people are leeching my bandwidth which I pay for. In simple terms, it is stealing.
Hot-linking
Hot-linking is a term used on the Internet. Hot-linking is when someone uses a link to an image that is saved on another website instead of saving a copy of the image on the website that the picture will be shown on. For example, instead of saving picture.gif and loading it on to their own website, the person uses a link to the picture as http://website.com/picture.gif. Hot-linking uses the bandwidth of the person who owns the website where the picture is stored. This costs that person money. This is why many website owners are using .htaccess files and uploading it to their websites.
In some cases website owners use the .htaccess file to replace any hot-linked images with an offensive image to deter any other website owners from hot-linking.
From - Wikipedia
I have recently updated my .htaccess files to prevent people from stealing bandwidth from my server by Hotlinking files from my site to theirs and one blogger just happen to see just how hotlinking works first hand.
It’s actually a simple code you can place into a .htaccess file to prevent people from hotlinking files from any or all of your directories.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http(s)?://(www\.)?allowedsite.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http(s)?://(www\.)?allowedsite2.com [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(swf|flv|gif|png|png|jpe?g)$ /path to hotlink file/hotlinkimage.bmp [NC,R,L]
I’m actually flattered at just how much time they must have spent on researching my website and the time they took to write such humorous crap. They even took the time to design a monogrammed hat for me. Gee. My very own MacBros hat. ![]()
I’m actually still laughing at this person.
I mean really! They got caught with their pants down and they get all hot under the collar and flam me because they were caught stealing from me.
It’s really sad in my opinion. (Which you are entitled to)
The image they were caught stealing was my American/Canadian Idiot logo that I threw together for an old post.
The image that is displayed on the offending site is made up to have the thief look like an idiot. Spelling and all. They point out how I spelled ‘Your’. I spelled it ‘Yor’ instead of ‘Your’. Big fucking deal! It’s meant to detour hotlinkers from stealing, so they take down the link. Not a spelling lesson. It’s not like the damn thing is supposed to stay up on their site. And by the way, it’s supposed to look like THEY made it. Duh!
The part I found really amusing was the part they tried to justify hotlinking. As if they is OK with them. I dunno’ about you, but when somebody steals from me, it pisses me off. That’s the whole reason for the .htaccess file.
If you like an image you saw on my site, just copy it and save it to your own server. It would be nice if you let your reader/viewers know where you got it too. It’s just common courtisy.
And speaking of common courtisy, since The Street Kings were so kind to give some linkage, I’ll just return the favor. Here’s the rant they wrote entitled, “Hot links! Get your hot links here!”
So here you have a quick tip on hotlinking, the results, and the effects. ![]()
What do you do to prevent people from stealing bandwidth or other images and files from your site?

Well John…what can I say, the hat looks good…lol. I have to share I enjoyed this individual’s rant. I was in need of a good laugh. Not quite sure this person knows exactly what he is writing about. I think it is to see his own words in print. Though it was a good laugh.
It is interesting his article is doing what he personally attacks your blog of doing….and that is ranting.
I also find it interesting he attacked your ability to spell, when it is quite apparent this individual is not perfect in this area as well. The grammar in the article left a lot to be desired as well.
Now going back to the hat. I wonder did this individual contact McDonald’s to gain permission to use the big M….lol… Oh no, I don’t believe he would steal it…no, I see an honorable person in his words…..lol. Okay I am being facetious now, I best stop before I lower myself to this individual’s level.
@Edna - I like the hat too. But what do you mean McDonalds? You mean this hat isn’t a personal monogrammed hat with the ‘M’ standing for ‘MacBros’?
He misspelled the word matter in the very first paragraph. What a dork. I think we should all change our avatars now to be wearing that hat in support of MacBros.
Oh, and I don’t know why he couldn’t have just asked you for the pic. I guess it was too much effort but getting all insulted enough to write a post about it when he was supposed to be researching a really original Fourth of July post, I’m sure, was the easiest way out.
Obviously, this individual knows how to save a picture, as s/he would have had to do so with your picture and that of the snazzy hat (it must be a MacBros hat, as McDonalds uses visors in a different color). I agree with your hotlinking philosophy, except I don’t host another picture in its place. I just deny access outside of my site (and yours a while back when the FNFO was going on). Now, to find out why the feeds have the pictures again…
@teeni - Great Idea teeni! Maybe I’ll do them all up tonight and leave them for a couple of weeks.
@MrCorey - Theft is theft no matter what way you look at it.
Their philosophy on hotlinking being OK because we have GB/TB of space and GB/TB of bandwidth, so it won’t be to taxing on the servers.
Um, I wouldn’t think that a Billionaire would be OK with some asshole sticking their hands into their wallet and stealing a few bucks every day, would you? Just because they have lots, doesn’t mean they are giving it away for free.
Did somebody from here make a comment? It looks like they removed it.
Updated Avatars. You’ll need to hit F5 to refresh your cache.
I’ll probably keep these for about a week or so and then return things to normal.
If you don’t get a hat, then just hang in there. I’ll get one for you when your avatar appears without one.

I love my MacBros hat. I may never want to take it off!
@teeni - Well, you can start to take other things off . Just as long as TGH doesn’t kick the shit out of me for taunting you.
LOL, I finally read the other site’s post. You know, criminal thieves (the kind of theft that is against the law) often justify theft also. Like stealing from the rich is really ok because they have plenty of money.
Nicely handled Mac.
And LMAO at your comment to teeni about taking other things off.
@MacBros - You know, I agree with you. I just don’t even bother wasting any bandwidth at all. I just block access entirely, so the image won’t show anyways. That way, if anyone wants my picture, they’ll have to save it and upload it to their own site. I visited that site, finally. I didn’t want to “read” your “picture” from work. They’re not too bad, but nothing special. Not my cup of tea, I guess. But, I’ve not really been into road racing with my bike. I want a rough and tumble hill to get to the bottom of.
@DragonLady - A Thief is a thief. Either they break your windows and steal property, or they are hackers and steal data. They are the same in my book.
@DragonLadt - Well….. I tried!
@MrCorey - IF they see mine. They’ll remove it!
Unless they like sucking the Male Organ!
And then to write such a long rationalization why his hotlinking was “no big deal” — all I can say is what a dork to infinity.
Do I get my hat now?????
@Larry - To infinity and beyond!
Well put, Larry. There’s no justification for theft like this. Especially, since he could have hosted it himself on his free blogger blog. Google has long ago allowed photos. He was just lazy. Its too bad that all hotlinked photos couldn’t be hosted on a super slow server so that it slows the loading of the thief’s page so much that nobody will bother to wait and load it.
