The Ringer
Sunday, May 14, 2006 13:46 | 116 viewsThis could have been a very distasteful movie. I actually thought it was going to be totally disrespectable to the real Mentally Challenged people out there during the first ten minutes of the movie. But once The Ringer progressed you started to view it in a different perspective.
I still feel that the movie was a bit distasteful with actors trying to act like Mentally Challenged People right in front of the real ones.
This was all in fun, and the movie was alright. Heck, some of these debut actors that are actually real Special Olympic Athletes were so good they seem to have been acting in films all their lives.
This story is very easy to follow, and you can pretty much guess what to expect next in every scene. You’ll know what’s going to happen before it even happens.
Guy does something bad in order to do something good, but in the process falls for a girl that thinks he’s something he’s not and in the end,…. well you know.
This comedy is about two guys who decide to rig the Special Olympics to pay off a debt by having one of them, Steve (Knoxville), pose as a contestant in the games, hoping to dethrone reigning champion, Jimmy. Mentally-challenged high jinks and hilarity surely follow.
I got more laughs from the newbie actors than I did with the so called professionals. Johnny Knoxville still gave me a few good laughs, in his own comedic way, like when the Priest *spoiler* face and *spoiler* stairs.
There were a few moments that I frowned on, like the use of the word retard, which was un-necessary.
The movie could have gone so wrong in so many parts but managed to steer clear of the tragedy it could have become. It’s still an ok movie, so go get the rental when it comes to a shelf near you.
This is recommendable, but this is just my opinion, and you’re entitled to it.
