The Web Hosting Game

I have noticed over the past few week that a lot of bloggers are talking about how upset they are with their current web hosting, and how bad their service is and that it seems they can never keep their site up long enough to allow them to get indexed.

Server Transmitting dataBeing a website designer, and having to either upload the sites to a host that the client has already chosen or find one can be a real pain in the you know what when that host is not very good when it comes to customer service.

I have had hosing services actually take the clients money and leave them with little or no info on how to access their accounts, leaving it up to me to try and get them to give some proper support, meaning that the end result was days and days of wasted time, or just having the credit card credited back and closing the account.

It’s hard to choose what company you want to trust in hosting your web site. Some people will say a particular hosting provider is really good, but then you have another handful of people saying they are no good. Who’s word do you take?

When it comes to web site hosting it sums up to a few main points. What’s their up-time, how many SQL data bases do I have, what scripts do they support, how much disk space do I need, how much bandwidth do they offer, what is their support like, and the list can go on and on forever when you look into all the features and benefits one needs with their own particular web site.

Server DownThe last thing anybody wants to see is their site being down for days while all their traffic is getting lost and their visitors may even sometimes think the site is closed for good and never return at all.

There are a few sites that can help somebody look for some web hosting information. They can help with giving you tips on what to look for in a web hosting service, web hosing guides to shopping carts, guides to reseller hosting, or what is best for your particular site like Unix or Windows.

For example Web Hosting Information.net is a web hosting information site that will guide you in the right direction when looking for the right hosting service provider for your site. They will provide you with guides that cover all the bases when it comes to proper web hosting.

They also do reviews on hosting services, so you might want to read up on them.

Whatever you do, don’t just jump at the first low priced hosting service you come across, because there’s a reason the price is so low, and that usually means service is terrible, or the servers are clunky.

Investigate the hosting service before you pay them any money, because with most sites, when you pay, you’re paying for at least a year.

This is just my opinion and you’re entitled to it. :p

This typo made me chuckle: “I have had hosing services actually take the clients money …”

A good resource you might want to recommend to your clients is the uptime.pingdom.com service. Using this they can run it on their computers and check up to 8 of their sites for free. They can pay if they don’t want to run the software on their own machine (which checks site uptime of other sites).

This way they can keep an eye on the reliability of their hosting company :)
