SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH: Fredericton and Southern York County
Issued at 5:08 PM ADT TUESDAY 29 JULY 2008

THIS IS AN ALERT TO THE POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL AND HEAVY DOWNPOURS. MONITOR WEATHER CONDITIONS..LISTEN FOR UPDATED STATEMENTS. IF THREATENING WEATHER APPROACHES TAKE IMMEDIATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

A VERY UNSTABLE AIRMASS IS SITUATED OVER THE PROVINCE TODAY WITH WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORMS THE RESULT. SOME OF THESE STORMS MAY PRODUCE VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS GIVING RAINFALLS IN EXCESS OF 30 MILLIMETRES HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS.

I thought so when I looked out the window and saw this hammerhead off in the distance.

Unfortunately the camera didn’t really catch what I was seeing completely. I guess it couldn’t see the darker clouds underneath the white hammerhead looking part. I could see some lightning pop out every once in awhile, but wasn’t fast enough to take a picture.

They’re talking about possible hail and high winds now on the weather station.

It’s funny though. I just looked out the window and it looks fine now. That just goes to show you that Maritime Weather will change just as fast as you blink.

They still have the Bright Red Warning on the Weather Station warning of the severe weather they expect across the province. So it looks like we’re still not in the clear.

Wow – stay safe! We had several days of severe thunderstorms a few days ago. My poor cats were all walking around, slinking low to the ground with their ears pressed back against their heads and my male cat wouldn’t leave the safety of hiding behind my legs. They truly are scaredy-cats. Well, the male more than the female. How do yours handle it?

@teeni – They couldn’t be bothered.

They’ll look around, then look to see if their food dish was filled up or not, and then go back to what they were doing…sleep.

The storms seemed to have missed us. I’ve been awaken in the middle of the night from a few though. I suspect the same again tonight.

I drove home through severe thunderstorms the last 2 days. Yesterday, when I noticed it, and thought “That looks like rotation” and gassed it to get past that particularly ominous-looking part of the cloud. There wasn’t ever a tornado warning, so I guess it was just my paranoia kicking in.

@DragonLady – I’ll hear about a tornado in these parts, but never see them.
